Skype - Transform literacy and learning in your classroom

Beginning on February 16th 2015, Skype in the Classroom is launching “Skype Celebrates Literacy”. This six week program will feature guest speakers from the publishing industry, lessons and resources to support and inspire literacy learning in classrooms around the world.

Literacy remains a high priority on the global education agenda and a core subject for classrooms everywhere. Lessons that involve reading, writing, speaking and listening – from poetry jams and reading aloud to author visits – have always been popular amongst teachers using Skype in the Classroom.

In 2014, you and your students travelled millions of virtual miles taking part in lessons around the world via Skype. Whether you collaborated with another classroom, played Mystery Skype, invited a guest speaker in for a Q&A, or went on a virtual field trip, chances are these experiences engaged your students’ literacy skills, perhaps without them even realizing it!

Here's how you can get involved:

1) Invite a guest speaker: authors, illustrators and storytellers will be available to join your classrooms via Skype. To make it easy to find and schedule a speaker to inspire your students, we’ve created a way to quickly schedule these calls. These conversations can be scheduled via Skype in the Classroom beginning February 9th.

2) Participate in World Read Aloud Day events: schedule a call on World Read Aloud Day or World Book Day (both the week of 2nd March) to celebrate the art of reading and writing. There will be a wide range of partner-provided content, tools, and resources to help with traditional reading and writing, including digital literacy and internet safety content too.

3) Literacy projects: we will have some very exciting literacy-related partner organizations including School in the Cloud, Microsoft, Safer Internet Day/ChildNet, and some very special guest speakers through those partnerships all coming soon.

4) Create your own Skype lesson: get creative and post your own literacy lesson for other classrooms to get involved in. Let us know about it @SkypeClassroom and we can promote it for you.

Using an online Reading Level site, Mike Soskil, a teacher at Wallenpaupack South Elementary School in Pennsylvania discovered that “Our 4th grade students, who have been using a curriculum of Skype experiences and blogging as part of their Social Studies curriculum this year, increased their writing scores on average by half a grade level from October to December. The students using this curriculum are either in special education or low achieving.”

With a stronger focus on learning experiences that directly support literacy we hope to help teachers everywhere create even greater impact through the use of free accessible technology like Skype.

GLOBAL INPUT – LCCI IQ Reps za Balkan organizuju Treće međunarodno takmičenje iz engleskog jezika HIPPO 2015.

Takmičenje je otvoreno za sve učenike između 10 i 19 godina i sve škole iz škola u Bosni i Hercegovini, Bugarskoj, Hrvatskoj, Italiji, Makedoniji, Crnoj Gori , Srbiji i Sloveniji. Učenici koji žele da učestvuju u takmičenju morgu se prijaviti samostalno ili preko škole.

Puppets, Plays and Paying attention.

How can we encourage our young learners to focus? Some children have natural concentration skills; others need help and encouragement to understand what they are learning. Using puppets and acting out simple plays in the classroom not only helps with their language skills, but with the very important life skill of paying attention.
In this session we will look at practical activities for the classroom.

Jeanne Perrett has over thirty years' experience in the language teaching sector and has significant experience in teaching children and training teachers. She is the author of a wide range of English language course-books for primary and pre-primary classes including Brilliant and Learning Stars.

Naziv programa stručnog usavršavanja: Theme-Based Instruction in Teaching English to Young Learners (TBI in TEYL).

Akreditacija programa: broj 702 u ZUOV Katalogu programa stalnog stručnog usavršavanja nastavnika, vaspitača i stručnih saradnika za školsku 2014/2015. i 2015/2016.

Nosilac programa: Fakultet pedagoških nauka Univerziteta u Kragujevcu, 35000 Jagodina, Milana Mijalkovića 14.

Autori programa: mr Vera Savić, nastavnik stranog jezika Fakulteta pedagoških nauka Univerziteta u Kragujevcu i dr Džoan Keng Šin (Joan Kang Shin), profesor primenjene lingvistike Univerziteta Merilend, Okrug Baltimor (UMBC), Merilend, Sjedinjene Američke Države.

Trajanje i organizacija seminara: 3 dana, 24 sata/boda stručnog usavršavanja (sertifikat ZUOV-a); organizacija seminara: dve faze: prva faza – dva spojena dana, od 10.00 – 18.00 sati; druga faza – jedan dan, dva meseca kasnije, od 10.00 – 18.00 sati; maksimalno 30 učesnika.

Pokrovitelji programa: Ambasada Sjedinjenih Američkih Država u Beogradu pokriva sve troškove održavanja programa (učesnici programa ne plaćaju kotizaciju); Američki kutak Beograd/ Novi Sad/ Niš/ Kragujevac/ Vranje/ Bujanovac stavlja na raspolaganje prostor i opremu i poziva zainteresovane učesnike.

Opis i ciljevi programa: Opšti ciljevi programa su razvijanje i unapređianje kompetencija nastavnika engleskog jezika za primenu tematske (interdisciplinarne) nastave kao inovativnog pristupa u nastavi engleskog jezika na mlađem uzrastu. Specifični ciljevi programa obuhvataju razvijanje svesti nastavnika koji engleski jezik predaju na mlađem uzrastu o potrebi integrisanja nastavnih sadržaja iz drugih predmeta sa nastavom stranog jezika na ovom uzrastu, kao i njihovo osposobljavanje za operativno planiranje tematskih celina i njihovu primenu u redovnoj nastavi. Posebna vrednost programa ogleda se u stvaranje baze operativnih planova tematskih celina i nastavnih materijala na wiki stranici za dalju razmenu i primenu u nastavi od prvog do četvrtog razreda. Treći dan seminara namenjen je prezentaciji tematskih celina koje nastavnici, učesnici seminara, kreiraju u grupnom radu i saradnji, čime praktično pokazuju stečeno znanje i stiču pravo na sertifikat.

The Project Competition 2015

This competition is organized by Oxford University Press, Great Clarendon Street, Oxford.

To enter the competition you must fill out the entry form, and submit it along with your project.
The entry form can be found in the ‘Attachments’ tab of the Project Competition brainshark
presentation.

All entries must be completed by a group of 2-6 students with their teacher’s permission.

Students entering the competition must be between the ages of 10 and 16 on the closing date
(28th February 2015). 

The winning students will each receive an Oxford hoodie and a Project pen. They will also win
a pack of bestselling Readers for their class.

The teacher of the winning group will receive a place on the Oxford Teacher’s Academy Online
course ‘Teaching English to Teenagers’, to be paid for by OUP, as well as a Project bag.

The winning entry and runners-up will be chosen by 13/03/2015 and announced on
27/03/2015.
