Predavači

Herbert Puchta holds a PhD in English – with a focus on ELT pedagogy. He has been Professor of English at the Teacher Training University in Graz, and President of IATEFL. As a writer and international teacher trainer, he has given talks, seminars and workshops to teachers in over 50 countries. Each classroom he visits makes him see how brilliantly creative teachers can be and how hard they work. It also teaches him a little more about students’ hearts and minds.

Karen Saxby has produced a wealth of material for younger learners of English, with recent published works including the ‘Fun For’ series for Starters, Movers and Flyers, the ‘Story Fun’ series and ‘KET for Schools Trainer’, all written for Cambridge University Press. Karen has an RSA TEFL diploma and a first class degree in Linguistics and French. She left the classroom to focus on a full-time career as a writer of teaching and testing material for students of English, with a particular interest in producing material for young learners. Karen has given talks and run workshops to teachers in various countries on behalf of Cambridge Assessment. Additionally she has acted as a consultant for the production of EFL material and the development of language test formats.

Bob Obee was formerly the Director of Studies of the British Council teaching centres in Athens and Kuala Lumpur. His publications with Cambridge University Press include the Grammar Activity Book (CUP). He currently works as a Professional Support Leader for Cambridge English Language Assessment with specific responsibility for the management of Speaking Tests in the region of South East Europe.

Jessica Cox is Marketing Manager for the Global Marketing Team at Cambridge ESOL. She leads on digital marketing activity for key ESOL exams and manages social media campaigns on Facebook and YouTube. Jessica was an EFL teacher in Japan for 11 years.

Predavanja

Herbert Puchta

Success with teaching teens

In this session, Herbert will be drawing on his extensive experience as a teacher, materials writer and researcher, to flesh out a teaching map featuring the key ideas about communicative language teaching combined with the latest psychological and educational insights into the workings of the teenage mind. Theories will be given substance by examples from Herbert's latest materials aimed at making the language learning process more fun and interesting for your students, and your own life easier. Be inspired by Herbert's insights, and use his ideas and his 'Checklist for success with Teens' to enrich your own teaching.

Karen Saxby

Teaching young learners

Both your adult, professional self and your inner child are invited to this session! From both perspectives, we will consider how the YLE tests motivate young learners in their acquisition of English language skills. Whilst your adult, professional self might discover how tasks are carefully constructed to practise and test meaningful use of language in a success-orientated way, your inner child will see they can also have some fun in the process. We will also consider how YLE teaching materials provide focussed and enjoyable ways to prepare learners for the YLE tests and stimulate cognitive, social and creative development. In addition, we will evaluate the use of storytelling in the language classroom. Please bring two colouring pencils, a blank sheet of paper and your own sense of fun and creativity to this workshop!

The lingustic discoveries of 2012

Tweet seats, eye broccoli, subway salmon and many others.

Every year, new words and phrases slip effortlessly into our informal language, often to stay there for generations, and, as a philologist, Adam Jacot De Boinod can confirm that 2012 has been no exception.

Here are a few of his favourites from the past 12 months. First appearing in newspapers, broadcasts, the electronic and social media, they have rapidly moved into general use.

All have the virtues of brevity, wit and invention – and there’s no doubt many of them are here to stay.
